This project worked to measure the prevalence and correlates of sexual assault among female university students at the University of Eswatini and to pilot test the Enhanced Access, Acknowledge, Act (EAAA) intervention based on survivor narratives and key informant interviews. Using a random sample drawn from all full-time female university students, the research team found that 60% of university women had experienced a lifetime completed or sexual assault. Perpetrators were most likely to be romantic partners or acquaintances. Only 7% of perpetrators were strangers. 85% of women reported experiencing street harassment in the previous year, and these experiences were significantly associated with worse mental health in the two weeks previous to the study. 38% percent of participants reported symptoms associated with depression or anxiety in the previous 7 days, and women who had experienced sexual violence in the previous 12 months reported a significantly higher number of symptoms. Women were extremely enthusiastic about the adapted EAAA intervention. In a small pre-post sample (n=18) we found that participating in the 12-hour program significantly reduced symptoms associated with anxiety and depression. Women frequently discussed the need to augment the relationship skill portion of the project to provide additional resources on sexual and reproductive health and HIV prevention.
