Dr. Elena KimAssociate Professor of Social Sciences at the American University of Central Asia

    Dr. Elena Kim is an associate professor of Social Sciences at the American University of Central Asia, Bishkek Kyrgyzstan.  She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on gender and international development, gender and violence, gender politics in Central Asia, research methods and theses writing, and supervises undergraduate and graduate students’ research. Elena earned her PhD degree at the Centre for Development Research in the University of Bonn, Germany. Her dissertation entitled “International Development and Research in Central Asia: Exploring the Knowledge-based Social Organization of Gender” used institutional ethnography to examine women’s experience of gender inequality in projects of “improvement” in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.  She has provided consultancy to United Nations Development Program, United Nations Environmental Program, UN Women and served as principal investigator in research projects funded by Norwegian Government and World Bank. Her publications include chapters in several books and articles including the Violence against Women, Journal of Gender Studies, Gender, Technology and Development,Central Asian Survey, Rural Society, and Women and Therapy.
